birthday ironies and tornadoes
May has been craziness to an absurd degree, but fun, too!
This month my baby brother turned 20! Craziness, for me and my friends that know him. My friends like Erin Britton and Liz Gardner knew him in diapers, and my college friends still think of him as a ten-year old with a bowl cut. =) My favorite memory with this kid is picking him up from school every day when I was 16-17, and he was still 6-7. We would get Taco Bell or Chick-Fil-A most days (yes, terrible big sister influence) and then go to pick up Blair at South Charlotte. I introduced him to country music, and our jam was "So Much for Pretending" by Bryan White. Ha! To this day, he will sometimes bust out with that song or put in that CD while we're driving. He's still a sweet guy, even at 20. And huge, now!
TORNADOES! On the day my brother was born - 5/5/89 - massive tornadoes went through the campus of Salem College (my mom's alma mater and now mine) knocking down original trees from campus. Amazingly, the walls of the buildings were fine. (Irony? Fi
rst line in our alma mater - "strong are thy walls o salem"). But the campus square has not looked the same since. We talked about this on my brother's birthday this year, laughing about how "the weather knew this kid would be all over the place." ....... NO JOKE, the very next day (5/6/09), a tornado passed by the outskirts of Winston, causing all of us here at Salem to be on lock-down. Thankfully, everything was fine. I just had to laugh out loud thinking of the timing of my brother's entrance into this world, and how the weather would once again replicate his dynamic spirit on his 20th birthday.
One more epic note - he and I are only in the same decade once every decade! So from now until November, we are both in our 20's. Crazy, huh?

WOW, that IS crazy that he is 20. Oh my, makes me feel old. Now I know why our parents used to always say that! Erin
